Moving day without the meltdown

Moving costs more and takes longer than people think. Plan it early so your first night feels like home.

Moving day is where tired people lose money. Boxes go missing. Trucks are not booked. Pizza is ordered at 11pm. It does not have to be like that. A little plan now saves a lot of pain later.

What moving really costs

Honest moving math for a first home
  • Professional movers (local)$600 – $1,500
  • Truck rental + gas$150 – $400
  • Boxes and packing supplies$100 – $300
  • Cleaning the old place$200 – $400
  • First-night groceries and takeout$100 – $250
Typical total$1,150 – $2,850

DIY is cheaper. Movers are easier. The right choice depends on your body, your help, and your budget.

DIY vs hiring movers

If you have young kids, a physical job, or no strong friends nearby, movers are often worth it.

The week-before checklist

Do these 7 days before moving
  • Book the truck or movers
  • Change your address with banks, CRA, and employer
  • Set up utilities at the new home
  • Pack a "first night" bag with clothes, chargers, and toiletries
  • Label boxes by room, not just by contents
  • Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day
  • Confirm key pickup time with your lawyer or realtor

Your first night in the new home

Make it simple. One box with sheets, towels, coffee, and a pot. Order food. Put the kids to bed early. You do not need to unpack everything in one night. You just need to wake up and know you are home.
